🕰 Woodward History Corner – A Look Back to October 26, 1939

🩃 Turkey Marketing Plan Returns
Farmers around Woodward were preparing for Thanksgiving early — the county announced it would again organize turkey marketing for local producers. The plan was meant to help growers get better prices and fair weighing. A 1939 version of “Shop Local!”

👗 Munsingwear Week at Delores Dress Shop
Ladies could pick up the latest in “Smarty Pants” and “Balbeauties” lingerie at Delores Dress Shop downtown — prices ranged from 59± to $3.00. The ad promised fabrics that were “as neat as a pin” and designed to mould the figure into slim, new contours.

đŸ« Mary Esther Chocolates – A Sweet Deal at Penney’s
Woodward’s J.C. Penney store advertised 5 pounds of chocolates for $1 — available in cherry, nut, or mixed assortments. The perfect treat for a 1939 Halloween weekend!

đŸȘ‘ Young’s Furniture Company Turns 30
Young’s celebrated its 30th anniversary with a giant sale, inviting shoppers to “come today” for reduced furniture prices. (Yes, the same Young’s Furniture that locals still remember decades later!)

đŸŒïž History of Golf Feature
A small column detailed how golf’s origins traced back over 400 years to Scotland. The article explained how early “golfers” used bent sticks and pebbles — proving that even in 1939, folks in Woodward liked a good story about where things began.

Just west of Quinlan, past a stand of blackjack oak, lies a stretch of prairie with twisted grass and dark, soft soil — a remnant locals call the old Freezeout place, though its story is nearly forgotten.

Once, this land and others like...

💆‍♀ Her Corner: Simple Self-Care Rituals for the Changing Season

As the temperatures drop and days get shorter, it’s easy to slip into “go-mode” and forget to recharge.

This week, take a little time to slow down, breathe, and treat yourself to the simple comforts that make fall so peaceful.

đŸ«– Sip Something Soothing
A warm cup of chamomile or cinnamon tea can instantly melt away stress. Add a drizzle of honey and a quiet moment by the window—it’s a five-minute reset that works wonders.

🕯 Create a Tiny Evening Ritual
Light a candle with your favorite scent (vanilla or cedarwood are perfect for this time of year). Turn off your phone for 10 minutes and just be still. Small rituals like this help signal to your body that it’s time to rest.

🌙 Stretch Before Bed
Try gentle chair yoga or slow stretching before slipping under the covers. It eases stiff joints and helps you sleep more soundly.

đŸŒŸ Get Outside—Even Briefly
Even a quick walk through the neighborhood or a few minutes on the porch can lift your mood. Fall air has a way of clearing the mind.

💛 Write One Line of Gratitude
Keep a notepad beside your bed and jot down one good thing each night—something you noticed, enjoyed, or accomplished. It’s the simplest form of self-care, and it truly shifts your mindset.

Remember, taking care of yourself doesn’t have to be complicated—it’s about choosing small, peaceful moments on purpose. 🍂

Quote Of The Day

"Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful."

đŸȘ” His Corner: Build Your Own Rustic Coffee Table This Weekend

If you’ve got a free Saturday and a few tools in the garage, this project is calling your name.
A handmade coffee table doesn’t just save money — it adds that custom, one-of-a-kind charm you can’t buy in a store.

🧰 What You’ll Need

  • 4 wooden boards (2x4s or reclaimed barn wood work great)

  • Screws or nails

  • Wood glue

  • Sandpaper (medium + fine grit)

  • Wood stain or paint (optional)

  • A drill, saw, and measuring tape

🔹 How to Build It

  1. Measure & Cut: Cut your boards to about 40" long for the tabletop, and 18" legs — adjust based on your space.

  2. Assemble the Top: Lay boards side-by-side, add glue between seams, and screw them together from underneath using cross supports.

  3. Add the Legs: Use thick 2x4s or even metal pipes for a farmhouse-industrial look.

  4. Sand Smooth: Take your time sanding — smooth edges make it look professional.

  5. Finish Strong: Apply a warm stain for rustic charm or chalk paint for a farmhouse vibe. Finish with a clear coat for durability.

💡 Local Tip: Woodward’s hardware stores often have discounted “project lumber” — perfect for pieces like this!

This DIY coffee table project takes about half a day, costs under $60, and leaves you with something you’ll actually be proud to show off.

So fire up some classic rock, grab that tape measure, and make sawdust happen.

💛 Until Next Time…

That wraps up another week of Woodward Shoutouts — full of hometown happenings, cozy comforts, and reminders of just how special this community really is.

As the leaves keep turning and the evenings get cooler, take time to slow down, wave to your neighbors, and find joy in the little moments that make life here so rich.

Thank you for being part of this growing circle of friends who love Woodward as much as I do. See you around town!

Love,
Matt

💡 Answer to Trivia Question:

The Great Depression. 💡 Bonus trivia nugget: The economic ripple effects of the Great Depression hit Oklahoma especially hard, combining with the Dust Bowl to create a devastating one-two punch for farmers and ranchers — including those right here in the Woodward area. Many families fled west, but some stuck it out and rebuilt. That grit? Still in the soil today.
