T.W. Shannon Engages Woodward Residents in Lt. Governor Campaign

Former House Speaker Highlights Vision for Oklahoma's Future at Town Hall

Former Oklahoma House Speaker T.W. Shannon brought his campaign for lieutenant governor to Woodward, addressing a gathering at the Woodward Conference Center on Tuesday night. He shared his vision for the state's future, emphasizing that Oklahoma is poised to become "greater than it's ever been."

Shannon, a native of Lawton, recently announced his candidacy for lieutenant governor. He spoke about his extensive background in public service, including his tenure as the first African American and youngest Speaker of the Oklahoma House. He also highlighted his recent role as a senior advisor for rural prosperity at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The event featured prepared remarks followed by an interactive question-and-answer session with attendees.

Reflecting on his time in Washington, D.C., Shannon stated, "I believe it's time to come home. Twelve months in Washington, D.C., is enough." He expressed a strong desire to address Oklahoma's economic challenges, particularly generational poverty. He outlined his commitment to principles such as free markets, constitutional government, and Judeo-Christian values.

During his tenure in the Oklahoma House, Shannon championed welfare reform legislation that required able-bodied recipients to work at least 20 hours a week. He noted that this policy became a model for similar efforts in other states. Emphasizing the importance of employment, he recalled his father's advice: "The best social program in the world is a good-paying job."

Shannon also addressed tax policy and economic development, advocating for attracting investment and expanding the workforce without raising taxes. He praised current Lt. Gov. Matt Pinnell for promoting tourism and expressed his intent to build on those efforts with a broader focus on economic growth.

Highlighting Oklahoma's core economic strengths, Shannon pointed to agriculture, energy, and aerospace. He emphasized the need to create opportunities beyond these industries to retain young talent in the state. He plans to continue holding town hall meetings across Oklahoma as he campaigns for the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor.

Woodward, a dynamic regional hub in northwest Oklahoma, has been experiencing significant growth and development. The city has invested in infrastructure and public amenities, including the multi-million dollar renovation of Crystal Beach Park, enhancing community recreation and events. The expansion of Northwestern Oklahoma State University's Woodward campus has provided more higher education opportunities locally. Downtown revitalization efforts, such as the Main Street streetscape project, have improved the city's charm and walkability, attracting both residents and visitors. The business community remains strong, with recent growth in banking, hospitality, dining, and retail sectors. These developments underscore Woodward's commitment to progress and economic vitality.

In September 2024, the Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics, in collaboration with the City of Woodward, celebrated the groundbreaking for a new terminal at West Woodward Airport. This $3.7 million investment aims to enhance the airport's infrastructure, positioning it as a regional hub and potentially attracting new businesses to Woodward. The project is expected to create employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth in the region.

Shannon's visit to Woodward aligns with the city's ongoing efforts to foster economic development and community engagement. His campaign focuses on leveraging Oklahoma's strengths and addressing challenges to ensure a prosperous future for all residents.
