🕰️ Looking Back: Woodward History — October 21, 1949

This week, we’re turning the pages back 76 years to a Friday edition of the Woodward County Republican — published on October 21, 1949.

Headlines that week told stories of simple times and close community ties. One section, titled “Down on the Farm,” shared updates from local farmers and ranchers — a reminder of how deeply Woodward’s roots have always run through hard work and neighborly connection.

The paper also included hospital news (the original “Facebook updates” of the day!), club meetings, and even a photo of a little “early starter” girl playing piano for a benefit recital — small-town sweetness at its best.

And tucked in between all those local notes and legals, there’s that feeling you can’t quite find in modern media: a genuine record of everyday life — families, farms, faith, and friendship.

“Back then, it was farm reports and piano recitals. Today, it’s Facebook posts and community shoutouts — but the heart of Woodward hasn’t changed one bit.”

🎨 Creative Corner: DIY Fall Wreaths with a Farmhouse Touch

Nothing says “welcome home” like a handmade fall wreath! 🍂
This week, try your hand at creating a simple farmhouse-style wreath that brings a touch of the season to your front door.

All you need is a grapevine wreath base, some neutral burlap ribbon, and a few pops of color from faux leaves, pinecones, and mini pumpkins. You can find everything locally at Dollar General, Walmart, or the craft aisle at Hobby Lobby.

For an extra cozy touch, add a wooden letter or sign that spells “hello” or “gather.” It’s quick, affordable, and makes your home look ready for sweater weather in under an hour.

🧡 If you make one, share a photo on Facebook and tag Woodward Shoutouts — we’d love to see your fall door dĂŠcor!

DIY Fall Farmhouse Wreath

Time: 45–60 minutes
Difficulty: Easy
Cost: ~$20–$35 (depends on what you already have)

Supplies

  • 14–18" grapevine wreath base

  • 2–3 stems faux fall leaves (maple/oak mix, warm oranges/yellows)

  • 4–6 small pinecones

  • 2–3 mini faux pumpkins (or gourds)

  • 2–3 yds burlap ribbon (2.5" wide) for bow

  • Wooden word (e.g., “hello” or “gather”), 8–12" long

  • Floral wire (22–26 gauge)

  • Hot glue gun + glue sticks

  • Wire cutters and scissors

  • Optional: craft paint for the word sign, floral picks for acorns/berries

Local tip: You can usually find all of this at Walmart/Hobby Lobby; pinecones can be free from the yard—just bake 20 minutes at 200°F to dry/kill bugs.

Step-by-Step

  1. Fluff the base

    • Shake out the grapevine wreath and trim any stray twigs. Decide where your “top” will be. Most farmhouse wreaths are decorated on the lower left quadrant or lower third.

  2. Dry fit the layout (no glue yet)

    • Lay the leaves, pinecones, pumpkins, and wooden word on the wreath to preview placement. Aim for an asymmetrical cluster on the lower left and open space on the upper right.

  3. Add the foliage foundation

    • Cut leaf stems into smaller picks (4–6").

    • Nestle the cut ends into the grapevine gaps and secure with a dab of hot glue. Angle leaves in one direction so they look wind-swept and natural. Build a “fan” about 8–10" long.

  4. Create and attach the bow

    • Make two 6–7" loops with burlap, pinch the center, wrap with 6" floral wire, and twist tight.

    • Cut 10–12" tails; dovetail ends by folding and snipping a V.

    • Wire the bow slightly below the leaf cluster; add a dot of glue so it doesn’t swivel.

  5. Place focal accents

    • Glue 1 mini pumpkin near the bow’s top, 1 near the bottom right of the cluster, and (optional) a third near the wooden word for balance.

    • Tuck pinecones into gaps and glue; cluster two together for a natural look.

  6. Attach the wooden word

    • If painting, do that first and let dry.

    • Run short lengths of floral wire through/around letters (or use clear fishing line).

    • Thread the wire into the grapevine and twist on the back so the word sits on the right-lower curve of the wreath. Add small glue dots under a few letters to prevent wobble.

  7. Fill and finesse

    • Step back. Add a few small leaves or berries to cover any visible glue or wire. Keep the right upper area mostly open for that clean farmhouse look.

  8. Add hanger & tidy

    • Loop a short piece of burlap or wire at the top back for hanging.

    • Remove glue strings and stray twigs. Fluff the bow.

Optional Variations

  • Neutral palette: Cream pumpkins, taupe ribbon, eucalyptus leaves.

  • Monogram: Swap the word for a large wooden initial.

  • Lantern pairing: Make a mini matching bow for a porch lantern.

Weatherproofing (for covered porches)

  • Light mist of clear matte acrylic sealer on pumpkins/word.

  • Avoid direct rain/sun for longest life.

Storage

  • Place in a large trash bag or wreath box; stuff tissue around the bow. Store flat or hang in a closet to prevent crushing.

Quick Fixes

  • Bow won’t hold shape? Use a pipe cleaner as the center tie and add a small dot of glue behind loops.

  • Elements sliding? Use wire + glue together—wire for security, glue for placement.

  • Looks too busy? Remove two items and group what remains; negative space makes it look high-end.

Quote Of The Day

"Autumn shows us how beautiful it is to let things go.”
— Unknown

On the stormy night of April 9, 1947, northwest Woodward faced a tornado that would become legendary.

While most folks scrambled for shelter, rancher Hank—known for his sheer size and stubbornness—chose to stand his ground.

With his wife inside and calves panicking in the barn, Hank hurried to secure the stalls, bracing himself outside as the sky churned green and black.

When the tornado roared through like a runaway freight train, Hank clung to a,,,

🧰 Men’s Corner: Projects & Pastimes

Fall’s the perfect time for a weekend project — and this week’s pick is one that’s both practical and satisfying: building a simple firewood rack for your porch or backyard.

All you need are:

  • Two 8-foot 2x4s,

  • Four cinder blocks, and

  • A saw and drill (or even just a hand saw if you like keeping it old-school).

Cut each 2x4 in half, set the cinder blocks on end for the base, and slide two boards in each side. Stack your wood neatly, and you’ve got a sturdy rack that costs under $25 and keeps your firewood dry for those chilly Oklahoma evenings.

🔥 Bonus tip: Coat the 2x4s with clear sealant or leftover stain for extra durability.

🌻 A Note Before You Go

As we move through these warm fall days, I’m reminded that seasons — in weather and in life — don’t always change when we expect them to. Sometimes, the warmth lingers a little longer than we planned. But that’s okay — it gives us a few more sunny afternoons to slow down, count blessings, and soak in the beauty around us.

This week, take a little time to enjoy your people, your home, and our sweet community here in Woodward. ❤️

“To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven.”
