A Stroll Through Tornado Survivors, Historic Landmarks, and Tall Tales You’ll Want to Believe

Woodward is full of buildings that have stood the test of time—brick by brick, tornado by tornado.

Some are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Others are more famous in local legend than any history book.
And some stories… well, we’re still trying to verify them.

🏠 The Stine-Bradbury Mansion: Bankers, Weddings, and a Touch of Glamour

Built in 1916 by early settler and banker L. L. Stine, this Classical Revival home became one of the crown jewels of Woodward. Over a century later, the mansion still stands tall—now lovingly restored and used for weddings and community events.

You’ll find it listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but don’t expect to find all its secrets there…

🌀 Buildings That Survived the 1947 Tornado (Barely)

On April 9, 1947, an F5 tornado tore through Woodward, destroying nearly 100 city blocks.

Many of the downtown buildings were reduced to rubble, but a few red-brick survivors still stand as quiet monuments to the town’s resilience.

Some of them? Still scorched in places. Others rebuilt from original bricks. If those walls could talk…

🥃 The Secret Speakeasy That May Have Existed

There’s a building just off Main Street that now houses offices.
But in the 1920s? Town lore suggests it was once a general store by day and a speakeasy by night.

Locals say swing music could be heard late into the evening. No hard proof. No photos. But... the original cellar is still sealed shut.

Coincidence?

🌟 Will Rogers Slept Here? Maybe…

A former hotel on the edge of town is falling apart now—but once, it was thriving.

Rumor has it a young Will Rogers stayed there before he became a household name.

Other whispers claim the place briefly hosted passing outlaws on their way to the Texas Panhandle.

True? Unlikely. Fascinating? Absolutely.

👻 Haunted? You Didn’t Hear It From Us…

A now-vacant furniture store is rumored to be haunted.

One former tenant swears they saw a figure in the second-story window—at 3 a.m., when the building was locked.

Others blame creaky pipes.

You decide.

🧠 Can You Separate Fact from Fiction?

That’s part of the fun.

Some of what you just read is 100% verified history (the Stine Mansion, 1947 tornado, Federal Courthouse).

Some? Let’s just say we’re leaving a little room for imagination and local mystery.
