Secrets of the Old Fairgrounds

A Woodward Tale

Beneath the faded banners and weathered wood of Woodward's Old Fairgrounds lies a story that has been whispered through the ages, passed down in hushed tones at Crystal Beach Lake and at the corners of every dusty street. A tale of forgotten treasures, long-lost secrets, and a community’s undying spirit.

It was the summer of 1947, and the townspeople had just rebuilt their lives after the devastating tornado that tore through Woodward, leveling everything in its path. The fairgrounds, once the heartbeat of the town during the cattle auctions and rodeos, had become a symbol of their resilience. But even amidst the spirit of renewal, something was amiss. There were rumors—rumors of something hidden beneath the fairgrounds.

It all started when Old Gus, the town’s beloved groundskeeper, passed away suddenly. He had lived through it all: the cattle drives, the storms, the rise of the Elks Rodeo, and the fall of many a lost soul. But in his last days, he had scribbled something strange in the margins of an old rodeo program. "The gold waits beneath the oak," it said. But there was no oak tree anywhere near the fairgrounds. Or so the townsfolk thought.

One evening, as the sun dipped low and the fairgrounds stood silent, a curious group of locals gathered, drawn together by the mystery of Gus’s last words. Among them was Clara, the granddaughter of a homesteader, whose family had once lived on the land before the fairgrounds even existed. She had heard stories of treasure hidden during the days of the cattle auctions, but she’d always thought they were just tales told to entertain the children.

But now, with Gus gone and the map of his final days left behind, Clara couldn't ignore the nagging feeling that perhaps there was more to the story than just local folklore.

As they gathered beneath the old wooden stands, an eerie chill settled over the group. The wind began to whisper through the trees as if the fairgrounds themselves were holding their breath. Clara’s eyes scanned the land, and her heart skipped a beat when she noticed something odd. At the far end of the fairgrounds, just past the rodeo ring where the bulls once roared, stood an ancient oak tree—its twisted branches like arms reaching to the heavens.

Could this be the oak that Gus had written about? The group moved closer, the ground beneath their feet uneven and overgrown. It was there, hidden beneath the roots, that they found it: a rusted old chest. The wood was damp, the iron corroded with age, but inside was a glimmering treasure—old coins, jewelry, and a dusty leather-bound journal.

The journal was the most curious of all. It detailed the secret dealings of the fairgrounds during the early 1900s when cattle auctions and rodeos were at their peak. It spoke of a secret society that used the fairgrounds as a meeting place, hiding away valuable goods from their less-than-legal dealings. But there was one entry that stood out above all:

"The treasure is for those who seek the truth. It will come to the one who understands the history of Woodward's rise and fall. Only they will know where to place the first stone."

What did this mean? What was the "first stone"? Clara’s mind raced as the others speculated wildly, each person taking turns to guess what the journal might reveal. But Clara knew one thing: the fairgrounds held more than just the memory of their proud rodeos and auctions. It held the secrets of the town's most mysterious past.

Could Clara and her friends unravel the secrets of the fairgrounds before others with darker intentions arrived?

The Secrets of the Old Fairgrounds were waiting to be uncovered—if only they could piece together the past before time ran out. There were hidden messages, buried beneath decades of dust and shadow, and they would need the help of the entire town to uncover the truth.

The story of Woodward is not just one of the rodeos, the cattle auctions, or the devastating storms that reshaped the town—it’s a story of a community bound by secrets and resilience. And now, Secrets of the Old Fairgrounds is yours to discover.
